The Chiefs organization received good news regarding Patrick Mahomes’ dislocated kneecap. MRI results from Friday indicated that the quarterback did not suffer any ligament or other significant damage to his knee.

The results mean that the reigning league MVP could miss as little as three games as he gives his knee time to recover. That timetable is as good of news as the Chiefs could have hoped for as Mahomes was visibly in a lot of pain following the injury, and early indications made it seem that the injury could be serious.

Mahomes suffered the injury in the first half of the Chief’s Thursday night matchup against the Denver Broncos. With ten minutes to play in the second quarter, the Chiefs ran a quarterback sneak on a fourth and one play. Mahomes got the yardage for a first down, but he stayed down in pain following the play. It quickly became obvious that the injury was not minor, and a medical cart was summoned to escort Mahomes to the sideline. Fortunately, the quarterback was able to get off the field with the help of two trainers after waving away the cart. He was then able to relocate to the locker room on his own power. The Chiefs quickly ruled Mahomes out for the remainder of the contest.

Mahomes was having an efficient game before suffering the injury, completing ten of eleven pass attempts for 76 yards and a touchdown. His only rushing attempt of the game was on the play where the injury occurred. Backup quarterback Matt Moore entered in relief and threw for 117 yards and a touchdown. The Chiefs went on to win the game 30-6.

X-rays performed at Mile High Stadium showed no fractures, and the 24-year-old took to Twitter to give an optimistic update shortly after midnight.

The rest of the sports world offered support for the injured superstar. Deshaun Watson, who knows what it’s like to suffer a major knee injury, quickly sent well wishes to Mahomes on Twitter. Carson Wentz, who suffered a torn ACL in 2017, followed suit. NBA superstar LeBron James, Hall of Fame baseball player Reggie Jackson, and Russel Wilson were among the other athletes rooting for Mahomes’ wellbeing.

Mahomes and the Chiefs will continue to seek medical opinions, but the hope is that he can fully rejoin his 5-2 Chiefs squad in four weeks against the Chargers. Kansas City will face the Green Bay Packers, the Minnesota Vikings, and the Tennessee Titans in Mahomes’ absence.

Matt Moore will face a tall task in replacing Mahomes in those games, as the starter leads the league in passing yards, passing touchdowns, and trails only Russell Wilson in passer rating.
