In 2019, the Dallas Cowboys are going to have a dig deep to have a successful draft. When Amari Cooper was acquired, the Cowboys 1st round pick went to the Oakland Raiders. Let’s look at what Dallas should do in this year’s draft.

Team Needs

DT, S, WR

DT

One of the most important things to have on a good football team is a good pass rush.  A good pass rush can end drives, cause turnovers, and even change games. Dallas has very little holes to fill, but another defensive tackle can put their defense over the top. Players like Demarcus Lawrence and Robert Quinn are the outside edge rushers and the starting defensive tackle is Antwan Woods, who had a solid season in 2018. David Irving is also a huge loss for Dallas. Look for the Cowboys to go defensive tackle with their 58th pick, which is also their first pick.

Possible Players Drafted

Gerald Willis III, Miami

Khalen Saunders, Western Illinois

Chris Slayton, Syracuse

S

Probably the weakest position on the defense is the Safety position. With Byron Jones moving to corner last year, the starting safeties are Jeff Heath and Xavier Woods. Besides them, there is not a lot of depth behind them to provide help on the backside of the defense. In a draft class where the safety position is very deep, Dallas might be able to wait until the later rounds to draft a safety. If Dallas can hit on a safety in the draft, it could sure up the backside of the defense to prevent big plays and neutralize deep threats.

Possible Players Drafted

Deionte Thompson, Alabama

Will Harris, Boston College

Jaquan Johnson, Miami

WR

On the offensive side, upgrading the receiving core would help Dak Prescott a lot in the passing game. Dallas should not expect to get a top tier receiver with no first-round pick. Dallas’ receiving core consists of Amari Cooper, Michael Gallup, and Randall Cobb. While solid, an upgrade can give Dak more options. If I am Dallas, I draft the best receiver available in the later rounds, not with their 58th pick. Their defensive line and safety are more crucial to their team than their receiving core, especially when you have Ezekiel Elliott who can give you 150 yards on any given Sunday.
