The Dak Prescott Contract Situation
The Dak Prescott Contract Situation
In 2019, quarterback Dak Prescott will be entering his 4th NFL Season. Prescott’s career has been nothing short of success but has had some criticism over his ability to complete passes downfield. The one thing that Dak is known for is his ability to win. Over his first three seasons, Prescott has led the Cowboys to a record of 32-16 with two division championships and a playoff win against the Seattle Seahawks in 2018. Dak has 8 comebacks and 14 game-winning drives in his career, which is the second most in the NFL since his career started in 2016. In three seasons, Dak has thrown 67 touchdowns to 25 interceptions and has thrown for 10,876 yards. Fumbling has been one of the problems for Dak over his career, along with accuracy and confidence to throw the deep ball. If Dak can fix his issues, he can move into the range of a top tier quarterback.
As this year approaches, there have been continuous talks about the Cowboys giving Dak an extension. He has come out and said that he wants to be a Cowboy forever, but it is the money that is making the situation difficult. Dallas wants to pay him close to 30 million dollars a year, which is absurd for a middle-tier quarterback. History has shown that signing a quarterback to a deal like this can hamstring your team for many years. Just ask Matt Stafford, Aaron Rodgers, and Derek Carr. If Dak gets this deal, it could prevent the Cowboys from signing guys like Byron Jones, Ezekiel Elliott, and Amari Cooper. The big question is, is Dak worth this money? Or is it smarter to sign the core of the team first and see if Dak will take a pay cut to start to build a dynasty in Dallas?
My Take
Here is my take on this whole situation. If Dak wants to be a Cowboy forever, then he would take a pay cut to save the team money. Dak needs to take a pay cut in order for this team to keep growing. Dallas can be regarded as having one of the best all-around young rosters in the NFL, so signing Dak can make all these guys walk into free agency and destroy the core of this team. If Dak does get the money Dallas is looking to give him, it could be a recipe for disaster a few years down the road.
