Carson Wentz Earns Four Year Extension
Carson Wentz Earns Four Year Extension
The Eagles feel like they have identified their franchise QB, and they locked him up early. The fourth-year signal caller inked a four year, $128 million extension, averaging out to a salary of $32 million annually. He scored a record $107.9 million guaranteed, and with the two years left on his rookie terms, he will be in midnight green for at least the next six years. It’s a great deal of money, but a bargain for a high-end quarterback (whose deals usually reset the market with every new contract). If Wentz can return to his spectacular 2017 form, this deal will look like an absolute steal before the end of the calendar year.
Wentz was the second overall selection in 2016, and started every game for the Eagles during his rookie season. He went 7-9 and set the NFL record for single-season pass completions by a rookie (379). He took off in his second season, going 11-2 as a starter, throwing for 33 TDs (second in the league), and becoming the MVP front runner until a freak injury derailed his season. His 33 TDs led the league before his injury, and are a franchise record. He was named to the All-Pro second team after the season. Backup QB Nick Foles was able to steer the Eagles to a Super Bowl victory, but Wentz’s contributions should not be forgotten.
His 2018 season was clearly inferior to his 2017 season, but he once again missed games and wasn’t the beneficiary of a full offseason. His stats did rise up across the board, as he recorded more completions, a higher completion percentage, a higher yards per attempt, and a better passer rating. Wentz is now the healthiest he’s been since 2017, and with Howie Roseman building a deep roster, there will be no issues maximizing his talents.
Jared Goff and Dak Prescott are the two other quarterbacks from the 2016 NFL Draft who are in line for mega-extensions. By securing Wentz before Goff and Prescott’s respective teams locked them up, Philadelphia just saved themselves a great deal of money.
For the greater good of the Eagles and the rest of the NFC East, I’m praying that Dallas gives Prescott more than Russell Wilson.
