Elite Status: Who is at the Top of the Chain?

In the NFL, there are certain tiers for each NFL team in which they can be classified as. Some are Good (Colts), Mediocre, Bad, or Even Awful (Raiders). Then there are the teams that are above everyone else, displaying pure dominance throughout the modern age of the NFL. There are a select few teams that are at this level, and here they are:

New England Patriots

Coach: Bill Belichick

Key Player: Tom Brady

To start off, the team that has dominated the 21st century and has become arguably the greatest dynasty of all time is the New England Patriots. With 6 championships and 16 division titles since the beginning of the millennium, Brady’s Bunch has been head and shoulders above the rest of the NFL, and to this day, their team is still in Super Bowl contention. With the Brady-Belichick tandem, New England will always be competitive. Even with Hall of Fame TE Rob Gronkowski hanging it up for a career, the Patriots still have a high-powered offense with the names of Sony Michel, James White, Julian Edelman, and rookie WR N’Keal Harry, and a veteran presence on the defensive side of the ball with the names of Stephon Gilmore, Devin McCourty, and Dont’a Hightower. In 2019, New England will be in Super Bowl contention as they always are.

Los Angeles Rams

Coach: Sean McVay

Key Player: Todd Gurley

The Los Angeles Rams are known for having one of the most high-powered offenses in the NFL. With names like Robert Woods, Brandin Cooks, Jared Goff, and Todd Gurley, the Rams flat-out outscored teams in 2018, and will look to do the same in 2019. The question mark on this team is the defense, but it should be better in 2019 with the addition of Eric Weddle, the presence of star Aaron Donald, and the anticipation that players like Marcus Peters and Aqib Talib will play to the level they are capable of after underachieving in 2018. An even bigger question mark with the Rams is the health of Todd Gurley. Reports have emerged that Gurley may not be an every down back due to his knee problems, which can be a huge loss to the Rams offense. Will the Rams get back to the promise land?

New Orleans Saints

Coach: Sean Payton

Key Player: Drew Brees

If it weren’t for a blown call in the NFC Championship game, the New Orleans Saints could have been crowned Super Bowl Champions. That could also be said for the missed tackle in 2017, so is it bad luck or coming up short? The Saints are one of the most balanced teams in the NFL and are led by Hall of Fame quarterback Drew Brees and Pro Bowl wide receiver Michael Thomas. Cameron Jordan anchors the defense to complete the Saints balanced roster. The Saints are probably the best option to repeat because of this, and in my eyes, will be right in the mix in 2019 yet again

Kansas City Chiefs

Coach: Andy Reid

Key Player: Patrick Mahomes

To round out the list of the top tier in the NFL is the Kansas City Chiefs. Led by superstar Patrick Mahomes can be defined as the AFC version of the Los Angeles Rams, but in my opinion, they are a little bit better than them. Their defense is better than LA’s, and their offense is more explosive, and Patrick Mahomes alone can single-handedly win a few games by himself. The Rams don’t have that player anymore since Todd Gurley is not 100%. Kansas City is the best chance to dethrone New England, and this might be the year that Mahomes and Crew took over as the AFC’s best.

Very Good: Dallas Cowboys, Philadelphia Eagles, Los Angeles Chargers, Chicago Bears

Good: Cleveland Browns, Minnesota Vikings, Indianapolis Colts, Baltimore Ravens, Pittsburgh Steelers, Seattle Seahawks, Houston Texans

Mediocre: Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers, San Francisco 49ers, Cincinnati Bengals, Denver Broncos, Tennessee Titans, Green Bay Packers

Bad: New York Jets, Detroit Lions, Jacksonville Jaguars, Washington Redskins, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Buffalo Bills

Awful: Oakland Raiders, Arizona Cardinals, Miami Dolphins, New York Giants
