The honor of the NFL’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) award goes to the athlete that portrays excellence both on and off the field.  At the end of the 2018-2019 NFL season, second-year quarterback Patrick Mahomes from the Kansas City Chiefs earned this title throwing for 5,097 yards and 50 touchdowns.  This performance helped make the Chiefs offense one of the most dangerous offensive attacks in the NFL. There was no question that the rising superstar quarterback deserved the award, but now the odds in Vegas have him in the running to win it in back to back years.  This would put young Mr. Mahomes in elite company. There have only been three players in the history of the prestigious award that has never been won in back to back years. Those men are Jim Brown in 1957-1958, Joe Montana in 1989-1990 and Peyton Manning in 2003-2004 and again in 2008 and 2009.  These three men are considered some of the best of the best the NFL has ever produced. Patrick Mahomes proved that he has what it takes to make an impact on this league, but can he really join this elite of company? To do so Patrick Mahomes wouldn’t only have to duplicate his 2018-2019 performance he would have to surpass it.  Is he capable of doing so? I believe he can and here are my reasons why. In most cases, first-year quarterbacks have success because defenses aren’t ready for how they play or if they can stay consistent. Pat Mahomes has one distinct advantage over other young quarterbacks and that is head coach Andy Reid. I’ll be the first to admit that coach Reid has his faults but one thing he does well is developing quarterbacks and design offenses around them.  Patrick Mahomes can make all the throws necessary to be very successful in the NFL and with coach Reid calling the plays he will have every opportunity to make a big impact again this coming season. With such weapons as Tyreek Hill, who is arguably the best deep threat in the league today, All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce and rising young running back Damien Williams who burst onto the scene after Kareem Hunt was suspended, Patrick Mahomes has nowhere to go but up on the stat sheet and possibly join some great NFL players who have won back to back MVP honors.
