NY Giants Must Be Aggressive for Kenny Golladay

After an eventful first two days of free agency, the New York Giants who had already met with Kenny Golladay and his representation only managed to sign two key players in running back Devontae Booker on Monday and John Ross on Tuesday. Booker signed a 2-year deal worth about 6 million dollars. Ross signed a 1-year deal worth 2 million. As the week unfolds there were teams like the Patriots and Jets who signed multiple players with their luxurious cap situation. But, as both of those teams handed out their paychecks it was a good sign for the Giants since both squads were looking to add a number one option at wideout like Kenny Golladay.

Golladay still remains unsigned and reports are that the Giants have questions about the pro bowl wide receiver before they hand him a massive contract to be Daniel Jones’s go-to guy. Giants fans had to see a defensive leader upfront in Dalvin Tomlinson leave, who was the heart of a promising front last year that was one of the Giants’ lone bright spots from their 2020 season. The fan base is dying for a splash from the front office during this period.

Here are 3 reasons why GM Dave Gettleman and the Giants’ front office should jump at the golden opportunity to sign this former Northern Illinois star.

Signing Golladay would allow the Giants to take another impact defender in the first round of the draft.

The Giants strength is still the defense even after losing Tomlinson. Being the 31st ranked offense in the league last year, there's only so much blame that you can put on Daniel Jones. The bottom line is he has never had in both college and his time as a New York Giant a consistent supporting cast at his disposal. A wide receiving trio consisting of Golladay, Sterling Shepard, and Darius Slayton is one that Jones can grow with. Whether they immediately click together with the offense mainly going through Saquon Barkley or if it takes a few games into the season the future would immediately look a little bit brighter in East Rutherford.

With rumors circling around the league that there will be 4-6 different quarterbacks taken in the first round, the Giants may have an unexpected talent like Micah Parsons drop in their hands. Dave Gettleman’s last shot to change the perception the fans have of him is on this season. He is working to save his job and a move like signing Golladay would show that he is willing to do whatever it takes to get the Giants back into contention. Knowing how Gettleman views the draft he wants to be able to take the best player available at number eleven, signing Golladay will give him that freedom.

The Giants hired Kyle O’Brien, a 19 year NFL executive as their senior personnel executive from Detroit.

This could either increase the chances of the Giants signing Golladay or decrease them it’s as simple as that. O’Brien was part of Detroit’s front office when they selected Kenny Golladay. If there is a relationship there it could be a positive one being that the Northern Illinois star was one of the only decisions the Lions hit on in recent memory. This combined with the rumors during the middle of last season of the Giants’ interest in signing Golladay makes it seem as if they are a financial agreement away from a deal.

The Giants’ offense is built for players like Golladay who do not need separation

When you look at the Giants’ offense for the last two seasons, most of it was based on throwing tight windows on timing routes, which is Daniel Jones passing style. You can say what you want about the former Blue Devil but he throws very tight and accurate passes.

Golladay will be able to take the top off the defense that gives Daniel Jones a more comfortable option when throwing 50-50 balls. Darius Slayton and Sterling Shepard have both developed some chemistry with Daniel Jones, but neither are capable of making some of the plays that Golladay does. Now, even after the signing of John Ross adding, Golladay would give the Giants five intriguing weapons to confirm that Daniel Jones is the right quarterback to lead the franchise with.

Only Time Will Tell

At the end of the day, only time will tell if Golladay ends up signing with New York. The odds aren’t as great just because of the Giants’ cap situation but some of the stars do still align for this to happen. Last year, the Giants gifted Daniel Jones with a left tackle in the draft in Andrew Thomas, now he is probably asking for a big-time target on the outside like Kenny Golladay. Dave Gettleman and company, let’s see this happens!
