Giants: Coaching Staff Season Overview

Giants: Coaching Staff Season Overview

The Giants entered the 2018 season with a new general manager in Dave Gettleman who had returned to New York to the organization where he had got his first shot to work in the National Football league under Ernie Accorsi. Gettleman has made some good moves as giants general manager drafting Saquon Barkley and finding BJ Hill and Lorenzo Carter in the 3rd round and has made some bad decisions giving Ereck Flowers another shot and signing StewaGiantsrt and Omameh. Gettleman's’ most underrated move was the hiring of head coach Pat Shurmur and here’s why.

Pat Shurmur was hired after the horrible 2017 season where the giants were blown off the field week after week. He was hired by a storied franchise who had major problems with their roster that weren’t going to be fixed in a year. This was going to be a multiple year process. The Giants started off 2018 rough. The New York media was calling for Shurmur’s head after that Atlanta game where he was caught on camera yelling throw it to Odell as Eli threw away a ball on a 4th and goal deep in the Atlanta red zone. The Giants were done, it was 2017 all over again, people were saying. Last year when the Giants were in this spot they rolled over and died almost like a  possum. They did not want to play for coach Mcadoo they were blown out vs the Niners as Janoris Jenkins jogged after a Marquise Goodwin trying to make a tackle. Shurmur kept his team fighting, it seemed as if he had a close relationship with every player on that team. They picked up tough wins late in the year vs teams like Chicago and Washington and fought hard in others like the Philly and Dallas game to cap off the year.

James Bettcher did a great job for what he was given with the defense they made a horrible defense on paper look average on the field by the use of an aggressive scheme that he brought over from Arizona. The defense was scrappy and fought hard in games and made multiple huge plays like Alec Ogletree and his 5 picks and Janoris Jenkins huge breakup to end the Chicago game. This coaching staff is here to stay in New York and they will someday be here when the Giants are victorious whether that is soon is up to Dave Gettleman and his crew to fix the holes in the roster and give Shurmur and Bettcher a ball club  next year that fits their scheme and “hates to lose” like Dave Gettleman says.

The Giants fans may look at the record and want Shurmur out but to see if he truly is the guy which I believe he is, he needs a roster that fits his needs as a coach. It may be hard to see but the future is bright in New York with the opportunities the younger players had this year to play in key spots will help them grow and mature more quickly. Shurmur is creating, or bringing back some may say, that winning culture that once was in the Meadowlands when Bill Parcells and Tom Coughlin walked the sidelines in blue. There’s a reason to be excited to be a Giants fans and it starts with these coaches.
