The curious case of USC and Bru McCoy
It appears that Kliff Kingsbury has once again come back to haunt the USC Trojans. Yesterday it was announced that five-star athlete Bru McCoy has entered the mythical transfer portal. McCoy had just committed to the Trojans at the All-American game on January 5th and even started taking classes at USC just a few days ago. The five-star was also named Maxwell Football Club offensive player of the year on Tuesday.
This move is a bit of a surprise given McCoy is a California kid who lives only an hour away from USC’s campus. McCoy is already the second decommitment in 2019, joining four-star Jordan Wilmore, who decommitted on January 14th. Both moves appear to be directly related to offensive guru Kliff Kingsbury spurning USC to become the head coach for the Arizona Cardinals.
The former Mater Dei star appears to be leaning towards Texas, in what would be a huge win for coach Tom Herman. Per transfer rules, McCoy will not be eligible to play this year even though he never even practiced for USC. However, with the Trojans botching the hiring of Kingsbury, he may be able to successfully file a waiver for immediate eligibility.
The Trojans have had a rough start in 2019 following a disappointing 2018 season. Historically a program known for its recruiting prowess and on the field success, they will need to find a way to swing the momentum back in their favor. If circumstances do not improve, USC could be headed into an uncharacteristic pattern of instability that could set the program back multiple years.
