Dolphins Draft: QB or DE?
Who are the Dolphins drafting in the first round? QB or DE?
Brian Flores walked into an interesting situation with the Dolphins. The Dolphins defense is falling apart. They need to quickly look for some replacements in the upcoming draft. Good news is they have the picks to do it. Heading into the draft Dolphins need a QB, DL, OL, DB, WR. They will most likely pass on the QB until next season, bringing some value to this defense and receiving corp.
The Cowboys announced Thursday they acquired Dolphins player Robert Quin in exchange for a 6th round pick. Prior to the trade, the Dolphins already retained a pick in every round of the draft. Now they have an extra fourth, sixth and seventh round pick. That’s not including the pending compensatory picks coming in for the trades of Ja’Wuan James and Cameron Wake.
Quinn was very reliable for the Dolphins but just doesn’t fit their defensive scheme. It’s no secret the Dolphins look to make major changes to their scheme this upcoming season. Quinn is better suited in a 4-3 defense and that’s not what the Dolphins are bringing to the table. When the Rams used the 4-3 defense model in 2012-2014, he dominated. He recorded forty sacks in the three seasons but has failed to reach twenty-five sacks in his last four seasons.
Play calling has changed. Despite this, he still led the Dolphins in sacks last season. Given the lack of talent on the defensive side of the ball, trading Quinn was not wise. He is currently twenty-eight years old and has plenty of football to play. He will be a for sure compliment to the Cowboys front four.
Outside of Xavien Howard and Minkah Fitzpatrick the Dolphins have no playmakers on the outside of the ball. Look for them to draft a pass rusher in the first round. It wouldn’t be surprising if they spend most of their draft picks cleaning up this defense.
