Who will start first?

Assuming that everyone feels the same way that I do, nobody wants to watch a quarterback drafted in the first round to sit on the bench. Especially not a quarterback taken first overall. Did anyone really want to watch Tyrod Taylor lead the Cleveland Browns last year with Baker on the sideline? No offense to Tyrod Taylor, but I most certainly did not. Sure, some quarterbacks need time to watch and learn. But don’t they have all Summer and preseason to do that? Any player taken that early should be expected to make a difference right away. Otherwise, why draft them? This year, three quarterbacks were chosen in the first round of the draft. Glossing over Daniel Jones because no matter how many picks Eli Manning throws he will start every game until he dies, let’s discuss when number one pick Kyler Murray and number fifteen pick Dwayne Haskins will start for their team.

Kyler Murray, drafted first overall and effectively replacing Josh Rosen should start week 1. How do I know this? He was drafted number one overall. The Cardinals had a chance to fill every other hole in their lineup, yet they chose to select Murray. Besides his dynamic skill set and familiarity with new head coach Kliff Kingsbury, look at the team around him. He has Hall of Famer Larry Fitzgerald, former second-round pick Christian Kirk, rookie speedster Andy Isabella, and tight end Charles Clay to throw the ball to. Not to mention a (hopefully) healthy David Johnson taking pressure off of him by running the ball effectively. Sure, they need a better offensive line than they had last year, but who would they rather have under center, Brett Hundley? The Cardinals are a work in progress, but there is enough talent surrounding Kyler Murray to accentuate his skill set.

Dwayne Haskins, passed over by the Giants and taken by the Washington Redskins, should also start week 1. He should; however, I don’t think he will. In his one year as a college starter, he was simply amazing. He probably should have been the second quarterback off the board, but again, glossing over that. Why won’t he start week 1? Because Washington has two quarterbacks ahead of him that have NFL experience. Before Haskins dropped to them, they signed Case Keenum, who is a decent option to let Haskins learn behind. Competing with Keenum is Colt McCoy, a longtime backup quarterback. If I had to guess, I’d say Washington goes conservative and starts Case Keenum until at least week 5.

And there you have it, Kyler Murray will start immediately while Dwayne Haskins gets the nod week 5. Daniel Jones…mops up Eli’s drool until the 2021 season.
