I was very pleased to hear that the Bills extended the contract of Defense End, Jerry Hughes. I had a fear that the Bills might be shipping him out to teams like the Ravens, Eagles, Lions or Bucs. At least, that’s what Cold Front report tweeted. For Beane and McDermott to let Hughes slip away this postseason would’ve been a major blow to the organization.

It would’ve been hard to forgive.

With Hughes now under an extension, that leaves only Shaq Lawson and LeSean McCoy as the only two players who’ve not had their contracts restructured by Sean McDermott and Brandon Beane. Considering that Hughes has been with the team since before either Shady or Shaq Lawson, I think it speaks volumes as to how much he means to this team.

When one looks at his stats, they’re not going to see all that he brings on every down. They’re not going to see the smarts, the relentlessness, the leadership and the overall game that Jerry Hughes has displayed since day one. His 47 sacks should definitely increase by the time he’s done in Buffalo and it’s looking like he might finish his career out here in Western New York.

This is just another terrific signing done by Brandon Beane and Sean McDermott this past offseason. Even if the product on the field doesn’t end up being as skilled and efficient as their management has been this offseason, I can rest my head easy knowing they’ve done so much by spending so little. Should this plan work, maybe they’ll be looking at this scheme much the way they look at Moneyball.

According to Chris Trapasso of CBSSports, the deal gave Hughes 19.7 million over three years. The contract will be ending when Hughes is roundabout of 33-34 years of age. We’ll see what the Bills do when we arrive at that point. For now, the Bills remain active in the buzz they’re generating around the league. This moves showcases a little more that the Bills are looking to contend in 2019 and beyond.

Alas, I remain the skeptic.
