It has been a long, long time coming, but the day has finally come. After all the speculation on the grueling negotiations that went on, QB Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys finally agreed on a deal that will make Prescott the quarterback for the foreseeable future. Let us look at the details of the deal, what this means for the Cowboys, and my take on the deal itself.

Contract Details

Going into his age 28 season, Dak signed a 4 year/$160M deal with $126M of that guaranteed. His signing bonus is $66M and will make an absurd $75M in year one of the deal. His contract will also include a no-tag and no-trade clause, with 2025 and 2026 being considered void years for cap purposes. It is a front-loaded deal as Dak will make all his guaranteed money in the first three years with $34M left for his final year of his contract.

What This Means for Dallas

The big question now is what is next for Dallas and what does this mean for their future? It is simple when you break it down with the fact that Dak is their franchise QB, and they were never letting him go anywhere. It was rather a numbers game from a money standpoint and a year’s standpoint. With the headache of these contract talks now put to bed, the Cowboys can turn their attention to signing key free agents and the draft. Most of their top-tier players are locked up already, putting them in a good spot to add a few more pieces to the puzzle without overpaying for guys they do not need. Dallas has also shown a good history through the draft in recent years and 2021 might go the same way for them. With their quarterback now signed, it is time to go win a Super Bowl in Dallas.

My Take

Some might call this deal overpriced, but when you have a quarterback at the level that Prescott from not only a physical standpoint but a leadership one as well, you overpay a little to keep him on your team. You cannot teach his intangibles, which just go on top of his physical skill. Dallas has failed to get over the hump for a long time but has made the playoffs with Dak in two of his four healthy seasons. In one of the seasons he missed, RB Ezekiel Elliott was suspended. Nonetheless, Dak has proven to be a winner and will now have added pressure to get it done in Dallas for the first time in over two decades. It is the correct move by the Cowboys and the correct move by Dak and like said before, now it is just time to go win a Super Bowl.
