Jalen Hurts: QB, Oklahoma

Height: 6’2”

Weight: 219

Grade: QB6

Summary: Jalen Hurts is obviously a very talented athlete. He has a strong base and extremely strong hands. He plays a bit like a Taysom Hill version or Cam Newton. Very difficult to bring down but if forced out of the pocket and the running lanes are closed he panics and makes bad decisions leading to interceptions, sacks, and if he is lucky just an incompletion. His accuracy problems differ from those of Lamar Jackson as Jackson missed because of mechanical issues, Jalen Hurts misses purely because he just is not able to make the throw. When the pocket is kept clean he does a good job of dropping back and setting his feet and delivering accurate throws.

Jalen appears a lot more comfortable pulling the ball down and trying to run and if you are looking for evidence of that he has 68 more carries than the top running back at Oklahoma at the end of the regular season. He has 196 Carries compared to 285 pass attempts. He has also done all of this with the help of a QB whisperer in Lincoln Riley.

Jalen could become a decent starter in the NFL and his character and work ethic bode well for the odds of him maxing out his potential. The problems loom very largely for the QB though and they are not something to ignore.

Did the committee get the CFB playoffs right?

For the first time in their show history, I have no complaints of the 4 teams that are in. LSU, Ohio State, Clemson were all undefeated and won their conference. Although the Sooners had a loss to Kansas State, Oklahoma bounced back to win the Big 12 and beat a tough Baylor team twice. No one else on the outside looking in had the resume to jump Oklahoma. Utah had their chance but was blown out against Oregon and Georgia was steamrolled by LSU. The only thing you could argue was between LSU and Ohio on who deserved to be the #1 seed. Although LSU had a tougher schedule, Ohio State had more top 25 wins and a bigger margin of victory. However, it’s a semantics game. In the end, the four best teams are in without any doubt. LSU takes on an offense as good as theirs. Jalen Hurts gets to make history to win 2 national championships with two different teams. Ohio State gets a chance to get that Clemson Tiger off their back and Clemson has been under the radar and underestimated all season. I’m excited about Bowl season.

49ers or Ravens? The Best team in Football?

Baltimore. I love everything the 49ers are doing. A forceful defensive line a suffocating pass defense and an offense that Jimmy Garoppolo is finally his stride and a proper supporting cast. However, there have been too many times this defense has been gashed this season. Kyler Murray twice, Russell Wilson and now Drew Brees. Outside of the back to back Chiefs and Browns games, the defense hasn’t allowed more than 20 points in 8 of the last 9 which included the Patriots, Texans, Rams, Seahawks, and 49ers themselves. The Ravens still have a top tier even with all the losses to their defenses in the offseason. The Ravens offensive line dominates in the trenches every week and Lamar Jackson shows you can slow him but he still can’t be stopped. I said this a few weeks ago when you two teams evenly matched the QB is the tiebreaker. Although Garoppolo has shown major progression, Lamar Jackson is already over 1,000 yards rushing as a QB with 3 games left to go and is on pace to have over 4000 all-purpose yards and 40 all purposes TDs. Ravens fans rejoice, you have that title until further notice.

Titans or Texans for the AFC South?

This was tough because for one I’m a Deshaun Watson fan and for two I have always had a soft spot for the Titans because growing up Steve McNair was my favorite QB growing up. However, although it did look like the Texans were getting legitimate separation from the division but going 2-2 in the last four, here come the Ryan Tannehill led Titans who won four straight. I’m happy for Tannehill for finally finding his place in the league. He was never a bad QB just unlucky with injuries. With two of the last 3 games are between the two teams, I’m leaning towards the Titans. More consistent defense, Tannehill is giving life to a wide receiver core that wasn’t able to shine with Mariota QB and Derrick Henry has become a top 10 running back. The brilliance of Deshaun Watson has been made clear on several occasions however in this instance, there have been several cases that it just hasn’t been enough to overcome. Titans are coming in hot at the right time and that isn’t good news for Bill O’Brien and company.

Who wins the Heisman on Saturday?

It will be Joe Burrow. The Narrative is there. An undefeated season, navigated through a tough SEC conference, and most TDs throws, passing yards and completion percentage than any other QB in SEC history. Although Jalen Hurts and Justin Fields were both responsible for 50 TDs in their own right and to Justin Fields credit has only turned the ball over twice all season long, Burrow has been more consistent and has been the best player on the field for LSU all season. With dominating performances against Alabama and Georgia this past weekend it has been award to lose for weeks and has yet to let anyone else get in the conversation. Chase Young has been the most dominating defensive player and a two-game suspension ruin his campaign but come Saturday night, Chase, Justin, and Jalen are just there for show. Joe Burrow is walking on that stage to claim his award.

Where do you see Ron Rivera ending up?
After considering all options for fit and need, he’ll either replace Pat Shurmur in New York or go to Cleveland. Both teams make sense. For New York, he brings establish identity and credibility. New York defense is going through a massive rebuild so why not bring a coach whose claim to fame is defense? Rivera is a players coach and with the firing, Cam Newton went to IG to showcase his love for Rivera and when you are a young rebuilding team bring in a hard-hitting players coach is what this team needs to be successful going forward instead of losing 9 in a row with Shurmur. Cleveland makes sense because you have a young talented team but no proper leadership to reel it all in. Freddie Kitchens has gotten the Browns playing good football in the later stages of the season but the damage has been done after the 2-6 start. Baker Mayfield continues to call out everyone in the media and Odell reportedly wants out, Rivera could come in and kill all the infighting and have the young players buy-in. Baker doesn’t need the head coach to be his buddy, Baker needs a wake-up call and someone to challenge him. Riverboat Ron is a two-time coach of the year, has a winning record and has taken the Panthers to the Superbowl. His message will get home harder than a coach wearing a shirt saying “Pittsburgh started it” and losing the rematch to staying in the playoff hunt.

Who has the best shot at claiming the Wild Card spots in the AFC?

Unless Buffalo has a massive fallout they should have the 5th seed. Buffalo is 8-3 playing top tier defense being 3rd in both yards allowed and points per game and their 2nd year QB Josh Allen taking a step forward. Although there are issues still to his game mainly protecting the football, Allen has become one of the best redzone QBs in football. This Bills offense doesn’t have that superstar player but they get contributions from everyone to John Brown, to even the ageless wonder Frank Gore who pass Barry Sanders 3rd all-time in rushing yards. They’re a scrappy physical team with a QB who you don’t want to have the ball in his hands on the last drive because he’ll make it happen.

The 2nd spot is tricky because it’s being currently occupied by the Steelers and I have zero confidence in them. If I had to choose it’ll be one of two teams. Either the Colts because I’m confident that Frank Reich will have this team ready for this final stretch. Although their passing attack leaves a lot to be desired their offensive line with their RB by committee has made them one of the best running attack in football.  Or yes I know I slammed Freddie Kitchens but with the schedule, they have the rest of the way after they dug themselves in a 2-6 hole they could potentially win out with their schedule remaining. Mayfield is getting more comfortable and easier play designs to work with and Odell Beckham is finally getting back to show why he’s a top 5 WR in the game. I know it’s a long shot but with the Bengals twice, the Cardinals and the rematch against a banged-up Steelers team they could pull it off but the safe money is the Colts.

Are the Ravens the most complete team in the NFL right now?

It’s either them or the 49ers for that title and we get to see that matchup on Sunday. Lamar Jackson is the toughest draw for any defense to play right now. His progression as a passer and scrambling prowess is second to none is why this Baltimore offense is hard to stop. Mark Ingram has proven to be a dangerous partner in crime and they get contributions from everyone in the passing game from the rookie Hollywood Brown, Willie Snead, Mark Andrews, and others. Although all the focus goes to Lamar Jackson and his MVP campaign the defense is more than holding up their end of the bargain. 11th in yards per game, 3rd best run defense and 5th in points allowed with a unit that has had their fair share of injuries.

Just because I’m sold on the Ravens doesn’t mean the 49ers are any less impressive. They answered all the questions I had for them this offseason which was only Garoppolo’s health and how well will the front seven played and both have been very good. The 49ers have the best defense in football and has made every opposing QB they faced looked mortal men except for the Kyler Murray. They have 4 running backs that can hurt you and with the addition to Emmanuel Sanders had lifted the passing attack more for Garopplo to do more. These two teams are similar in almost every aspect but I will give the edge to Baltimore only because I trust the track record of John Harbaugh than I do Kyle Shannahan and Jackson is the hot hand to ride on.

Who are your offensive and defensive rookie of the year?

Offense? Josh Jacobs. He’s been the catalyst and the reason why the Raiders have a physical identity on offense. Although the award Kyler Murray and Daniel Jones have shown flashes, Jacobs has been the only consistent offensive rookie all season. Averaging 4.8 YPC and in the top 5 for the rushing title, this is the safe and logical pick for this award.

Defense? Nick Bosa with Josh Allen from Jacksonville a close second. Bosa has transformed this 49ers defense into the best in football. He’s tied with Allen with the most sacks for rookies with 8, a forced fumble, 2 fumble recoveries, and an interception. Bosa has lived up to the draft hype and his impact has helped Arik Armstead DeForest Buckner and Dee Ford. If Bosa showcases another big game and the league’s most dangerous QB Lamar Jackson on Sunday then that will put him some significant distance between himself Josh Allen and Maxx Crosby for the award.

What do the Eagles need to do to run the table?

Get Brandon Brooks and Lane Johnson back healthy is the most important part. Last Sunday against the Seahawks that offensive line was in for a long cold and rainy afternoon giving up 5 sacks. That’s the important piece. The next is whether it’s Mike Groh or Doug Pederson calling the plays, they need to establish the running game again and take the pressure off of Carson Wentz having to throw 35-40 times to a receiving core where no one has confidence in. Those are the only two main factors. If that happens everything else should fall in place. The Eagles only play one more winning team on their schedule and that’s Dallas in week 16. The rest is 4 teams that all have a combined 6 wins between each other( Giants twice, Washington and Miami). Getting their offensive line healthy and getting their running game going again has been the blueprint on all the Eagles wins so far this season. They do that with the way the Eagles defense has been playing, they can still be a playoff team. However, this coaching staff needs to adjust and help their franchise QB get his confidence back because, by the looks of it, Wentz’s confidence is shattered.

Will Jalen Hurts to be a first-round pick?
I’m not sold that will be the case, but it wouldn’t surprise me if he did. With the current climate of the NFL now that dual-threat QBs are taking over the league someone could shock the world and take the Heisman candidate. Teams now are allowing their dual-threat QBs to maximize their full capabilities to run and are designing their offense to cater to their strengths. We’re seeing it now with Lamar Jackson, Russell Wilson Deshaun Watson, Dak Prescott, Josh Allen and even rookie Kyler Murray. All are dual threats and are being used to showcase their potential I can see a team like Miami or Oakland who have multiple 1st rounders using one of those extra 1st to take a chance at him. He has a good frame and an NFL caliber arm. Sitting behind a vet like a Ryan Fitzpatrick or even a Jacoby Brissett could do wonders and we could see him make an impact and be another Lincoln Riley guy who finds his way in the league. The NFL is a copycat league and the success of Lamar could sway other GMs to look Hurts’ way when they wouldn’t have before.
