Giants Off Season Quarterback Options

The New York Giants are coming off another unsuccessful season. Improving by only two wins from the previous season, the Giants seem to be paying the price for not having a plan or any idea how to handle the Eli Manning situation. Now they are stuck with a 37, soon to be 38 year old quarterback, who we have not seen a successful season out of since Tim Tebow was leading  the Denver Broncos. The giants seemed to be interested and were going to have a shot to get Oregon’s Justin Herbert, but since he is returning to school, here are some of their options to address the quarterback problem that they have.

Free Agency

The Eagles were in trouble and on the verge of not making the playoffs, until Saint Nick was put in for the last three weeks, beating two playoff teams and throwing for 25 straight completions in a blow out win vs the Washington Redskins. The giants will probably have the best shot of winning in 2019 with Nick Foles under center. Foles’ 27 touchdowns and 2 interception season was under then offensive coordinator and current Giants head coach Pat Shurmur. This is something to keep an eye on moving forward.

Teddy has history with Pat Shurmur from his Minnesota days. Teddy looked to have some qualities of a franchise quarterback before his injury in Minnesota. Shurmur may have confidence he can revive the Louisville products’ career.

The Draft

Dwayne Haskins

Haskins, the Heisman trophy finalist, has led the Buckeyes to a successful season, barely missing the playoff. He seems as of now to be the best option come draft time in April. Haskins’ mobility and accuracy may allow him to break the streak of bad Ohio State quarterbacks. Pairing him up with Barkley, Beckham, Shepard, and Engram may allow him to have early success as a giant. The jersey kid has a good chance of returning home come April.

Drew Lock

The Missouri standout has all the right tools to be a successful quarterback in the NFL. Mobility and crazy arm strength are what he is known for. Pat Mahomes comparisons, and a good combine and pro day, may make a team reach for this kid. The 4 years of experience under his belt also helps him when comparing to the other quarterbacks of this draft class.

Will Grier

Grier, the West Virginia junior, missed his final bowl game so he was healthy heading into draft season. Grier has that winning mentality and has taken it everywhere he has gone. Dave Gettleman, Giants general manager, has scouted Grier before. His mobility and frame make him a guy to keep an eye on during draft time.

One more ride

Eli Manning

Manning’s average second half of the season may have bought him another year as the giants quarterback. The ownership can’t seem to let go of this guy after what he has done for the franchise. With this underwhelming NFL draft quarterback class and a mediocre free agency crop, the giants may look to fix their horrible defense or mediocre offensive line in round 1 and pass on a Quarterback. They may trust Manning enough to spend their money in free agency elsewhere. Expect to see Manning under center for one last ride next season.
