What if the Super Bowl was older?
What if the Super Bowl was older?
I’ve always wondered how things would be different if the Super Bowl was as old as the league itself. Had they had the Super Bowl each year since 1920, would the losers of today really be looked at as losers? Which teams would be off of the list of teams that never won the Super Bowl? Well, I took matters into my own hands and did a little digging. Here’s what I found.
I consider the NFL Championship to basically be the Super Bowl because the NFL was the predominant league and had a championship game. It wasn’t called the Super Bowl but it was the Super Bowl. It was won nine times by both the Packers and Bears. The Browns, Lions, and Giants all have four while the Eagles have three. The Colts and Rams have two each and the Redskins? They have two as well.
Notice the Steelers claim none, funny how things change.
Before the Packers really became the NFL’s first dynasty, teams you’ve most likely never heard of like the Canton Bulldogs and the Frankford Yellow Jackets. If these are called “Super Bowls” instead of “NFL Championships”, does it change the way we look at these teams? Does it change the way we look at that game? It might.
Those champions I mentioned are mainly from 1920 to 1966. We all know what’s happened there. If measured for inflation, the Packers would have 13, the Bears would have 10, the Giants would have eight, the Colts would have four just like the Eagles would, the Rams would have three. The Browns would still have four.
That changes the landscape of NFL Football but what would have if one were to jump into a time machine and change the name of the big game to “Super Bowl” sooner? This puts a greater history on the game but it’s just speculation now. I saw just combine the two and add up your championships. It’s crazy to think the Patriots have more than the Browns and Rams in just 18 years. We’re on year 100 of the NFL but whatever.
