Chiefs Take Down Bills, Move to 5-1

On a unique Monday game, the Kansas City Chiefs took on fellow AFC opponent, the Buffalo Bills. Both teams went into this game coming off a loss and were both looking to get to 5-1. On this day, the Chiefs prevailed, defeating the Bills 26-17 on a cold, rainy day in Buffalo.

Game Details

Because of the weather, both teams came out sloppy on the offensive side of the ball. Passes were not on point and both offenses were having a tough time moving the ball down the field. After a 48-yard field goal from Buffalo, the Chiefs answered with an 11-yard touchdown catch by Travis Kelce, his first of two on the day. Trailing 7-3, Buffalo came right back when QB Josh Allen hit WR Stefon Diggs on the sideline for a nice toe-tap touchdown. Diggs finished the day with six catches for 46 yards. Kansas City, once again, would answer back when Travis Kelce caught his second touchdown pass of the day. Kansas City took a 13-10 going into halftime and never trailed again, winning the game 26-17.

Bell Who?

When you think of the Kansas City Chiefs, you think of an explosive air raid led by star QB Patrick Mahomes. In this game, that was not the case. Just days removed from inking RB Le’Veon Bell to a contract, the first-round pick RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire made a statement for Kansas City. The rookie had a career day, totaling 26 carries for 161 yards, while also catching four passes for eight yards.

As a team, Kansas City controlled the clock and ran the Bills defense into the ground. In total, the Chiefs ran for 245 yards and one touchdown (Darrel Williams). Kansas City held the ball for 37:45, a key stat in a bad weather contest. With Bell on the way, it is scary to think that this team can beat you from any angle offensively, even when the passing game is not the focal point.

Kansas City Defense

What took Kansas City over the top in 2019 was their defense, who turned a corner down the stretch. This success has continued into 2020, proving this is not a fluke and that they are legit. The Chiefs made a usually explosive Bills offense look lost, holding them to just 206 yards of offense, specifically 122 yards passing and 84 yards rushing. Kansas City did a nice job of limiting the explosive plays and controlling the line of scrimmage. Even without recording a sack, the Kansas City defensive line was getting pressure on Allen the whole game, which is an uncomfortable feeling, especially with the weather. Kansas City is allowing just 21.2 PPG and 208 YPG through the air. The defense is much improved and has been an enormous reason for their 5-1 start in 2020.

Allen Struggles

After starting the year on fire, Bills QB Josh Allen has hit a bump in the road. During their modest two-game losing streak, Allen is 40/68 with 4 TD and 3 INT. Not terrible numbers, but a major drop from the first four weeks. The Bills are still in a good spot at 4-2, leading the AFC West and Allen has too much talent to keep struggling. Allen should have no problem finding success in Week 7 against the New York Jets, who are currently 0-6.

Looking Ahead

As stated before, the Bills will look to end their two-game losing streak as they head to MetLife Stadium to take on the New York Jets (0-6). As for the Chiefs, they will look to move to 6-1 and take a commanding lead in the AFC West on the road against Drew Lock and the Denver Broncos (2-3).
